We are regionalists and believe that good design grows, to a large extent, out of unique qualities of landscape, topography, climate and locally available building materials as well as the clients desires, needs, and character as well as an artful approach to the development of the design.
We strive to make our buildings revelatory; intensifying and focusing qualities of landscape and light and space as well as enhancing the innate beauty and character of materials used. The building becomes a mediator between the inhabitants and the natural surroundings, a setting in which the owners particular uniqueness are held and supported in ways that make them feel particularly at home.
We design for sustainability and energy efficiency while not compromising the importance of design that is humane and poetic. The firm has done projects in which recycled material were maximized. We have also begun to use rammed earth technology in construction.
The importance of getting to know the Client and their particular vision, needs and desires is central to how we proceed in terms of design. This is done through informal discussion as well as the use of questionnaires that systematically elicit information on practical and aesthetic issues. These are then meshed with the opportunities and limits of the site and budget to develop the appropriate design. The client is closely involved with all stages as the design develops.
